The eas(ier)y way of doing good research!!

Not many people know this but writing a good review paper is the eas(ier)y way of doing good research.. what you need are:

1) A good internet connection
2) Access to Global Databases
3) A good understanding of your subject
4) An aptitude for Research

You can bring together the different kinds of research done on a particular topic, set a common benchmark and write a review. This is also research that is well appreciated. If you are the type who never wants to conduct an experiment but would like to contribute to your field of interest, this is the way to go!!

Now you could be the best cricketer in the world but people will recognize you only if you wear the national jersey and come on TV!!

Most things work similarly. You could have done some great research at your end but the only way in which others will recognize its importance is by publishing it in an Indexed conference/Journal.

The same way Wisden indexes the achievements of cricketers, there are databases globally that index good conferences and journals. Getting your paper published in an indexed conference/journal will earn you recognition globally.

http://www.elsevier.com/online-tools/scopus is a famous database that indexes work from around the world. http://www.sciencedirect.com/ is another very famous database.

Ensure that you publish in recognized forums for people to recognize your research.

Planning to go abroad for higher education, write a Paper!!

Students in Asia, more particularly in the Indian Sub Continent have a huge misconception about admissions abroad. They will spend 80% of their time and effort in preparing for GRE/GMAT/SAT not realizing that this is nowhere close to the importance given by universities in their application process. This mentality is possibly the result of entrance exams in India (like the IIT JEE) where complete focus is on the entrance exam and not the overall package that the student is. It would not matter if you played the violin or led the choir at your church; you just have to be in the top 1% of the exam takers to crack the exam.

The authors of this blog do not condemn the Indian system of admissions as it is possibly the only way to screen a potential 300,000 applicants into 3000 odd seats, but people must be aware that this approach will badly backfire when you are looking at pursuing a degree abroad.

Whenever we try and shortlist institutions to study abroad, the one thing we unfailingly notice is its ranking. Nobody ever bothers to check how the rankings are derived in the first place!!

Check out this link that shows how Universities are ranked:
http://www.shanghairanking.com/ARWU-Methodology-2013.html

You would notice that 90% of weight in the rankings goes to.... you guessed it RESEARCH!!

The reason research is given such high importance is because an institution can produce good quality research if and only if all other requirements of a good institution were already in place.

This is clearly shown in the application forms of different universities this year, most applicants just leave it blank which adversely affects their chances. You can see for yourself screenshots of different university application forms:

New York University Poly
 University of Southern California

This is the Recommendation Format for the University of Texas at Arlington:

Universities also offer tution fee waivers in the form of Teaching and Research assistant ships. These are of great value in reducing the financial burden on the student. Imagine having the cake and eating it too!!

Logical Implication: If you show a good aptitude in Research, the institution will be after you!!

Research and I.... Why?

A lot of people have asked us if writing research papers is for everyone....

The problem with Indian education is that any attempt at innovation is met with trepidation and insecurity. Think of the last time you tried cooking a new dish, or a stunt on your bike or even a new way of saying hi to the cute girl next door....Voila!! You have done research before in your life!!

Now that sounded way too simplistic, you would know the people in your class who typically wrote papers by going to paper presentation competitions or spent long hours with your professors trying to come up with some hi tech result. Some would have succeeded and the others would have failed, what one must understand is that both the results are publishable. When a hypothesis is rejected, that is also the result of research.

Now we used a term called Hypothesis, what is that??

Hypothesis - Make an assumption about a particular situation. This is a Hypothesis. As simple as that.

Experimental Research - Proving or Disproving the Hypothesis.

Example in the real world:

Situation: The Movie Amazing Spiderman 2 has released

Hypotheis: I will like the Movie

Experiment: Watching the movie

Result: You have proved or disproved the Hypothesis!!

Now if we are to take this into the technical domain, we would need to come up with an equivalent situation, frame the hypothesis, conduct the research and publish the result. The sections below would explain how that is done.

Theme Identification: Yes, we understand that you don't feel as comfortable calling yourself as qualified a graduate as say the guy across the street who is acing his papers in IIT Madras. But in the time you have spent in college, there would be that one subject/topic that interested you more than others. We would explore this with you to identify the theme of your research.

Literature Survey: To truly understand the situation (as described in the situation above), one would need to understand what is the current level of research that has gone on in the field (ourt textbooks are a wee bit outdated... we cannot understand why students are taught the working of the 80286 microprocessor!!).

Research Assignments: Now, eating an entire cake in a single sitting would upset your stomach, but eating it over a couple of days one slice at a time makes it a wonderful experience. This his how we take you through the different parts of research. It is completely fine if you do not understand something, our expert mentors will guide you through the process.

Conference Identification and Publishing: So you have seen Amazing Spiderman 2 and have made your mind up on how good/bad the movie is; you need a place and a format in which your review is written. Similarly, we help you identify conferences/journals that would accept your paper and help you publish it.

Congratulations!!

You can now send the link to your friends on Facebook and boast about your research credentials!!
